Whether cleaning is appropriate depends on the filter condition — the degree of restriction, whether the substrate is physically intact, and the type of contamination present. We assess each filter before and after cleaning and communicate the findings honestly. We will not recommend cleaning where it is unlikely to produce a useful result.

Professional off-car cleaning can reduce ash loading, but effectiveness depends on the ash load, filter design and how the ash is distributed within the substrate. Unlike soot, ash is not combustible and cannot be removed through regeneration. Off-car cleaning is the more appropriate method when ash accumulation is a significant factor, though the outcome will vary by filter condition.

Regeneration uses high exhaust temperature to burn accumulated soot within the filter while it remains in the vehicle. Off-car cleaning involves removing the filter and processing it through purpose-built cleaning equipment to remove soot, ash and other contamination. Regeneration does not remove ash and is not effective when the filter is heavily loaded or physically contaminated.
