DPF Replacement vs DPF Cleaning — Which Do You Need?

DPF Replacement vs DPF Cleaning — Which Do You Need?

When your diesel vehicle has a blocked DPF, you’ll likely be faced with a choice: clean it or replace it. At Progressive Vans, we give honest, unbiased advice on this question as part of our DPF cleaning Melbourne service — and in the vast majority of cases, professional cleaning is the right answer.

The Cost Difference

DPF replacement is expensive. Depending on the vehicle, a new OEM DPF can cost anywhere from $1,500 to $5,000 or more, plus labour for removal and installation. Aftermarket DPFs are cheaper but vary significantly in quality and may not perform as well as the original.

Professional DPF cleaning, by contrast, typically costs a fraction of replacement — and delivers equivalent results for a filter that’s blocked but physically intact. For most vehicles with a blocked DPF, cleaning is the clear financial winner.

When Cleaning Is the Right Choice

Professional DPF cleaning is appropriate when:

  • The DPF is blocked with soot and/or ash but is physically intact
  • There are no cracks, holes, or substrate damage
  • The blockage is not caused by oil contamination (which can permanently damage the filter)
  • The vehicle doesn’t have underlying engine issues that are causing excessive soot production

A professional clean removes both soot and ash, restoring the filter’s full capacity and flow characteristics. A well-cleaned DPF performs equivalently to a new one and can be cleaned multiple times over its service life.

When Replacement Is Necessary

DPF replacement is genuinely necessary when:

  • The filter substrate is cracked or physically damaged
  • The filter has been contaminated with engine oil or coolant (which permanently damages the substrate)
  • The filter has been cleaned multiple times and is no longer performing adequately
  • The filter has melted or been damaged by an excessively hot regeneration event

We assess every DPF before recommending cleaning or replacement. If cleaning won’t resolve the problem, we’ll tell you — and we’ll explain exactly why replacement is necessary.

Beware of Unnecessary Replacement Recommendations

Unfortunately, some workshops recommend DPF replacement when cleaning would be perfectly adequate — either because they don’t have the equipment or expertise to clean DPFs professionally, or because replacement generates more revenue. At Progressive Vans, we always recommend the most appropriate and cost-effective solution for your specific situation.

Addressing the Root Cause

Whether you clean or replace your DPF, addressing the underlying cause of the blockage is essential to prevent recurrence. Common causes include predominantly short-trip urban driving, faulty EGR valves, injector issues, and oil consumption problems. Our diagnostic process identifies any contributing factors and we advise on how to address them.
