⚠ Roadworthy Certificate vs Pre-Purchase Inspection
A common misconception is that a Victorian Roadworthy Certificate means a vehicle is mechanically perfect.
It doesn't.
A roadworthy inspection is designed to assess specific safety-related items required for registration. A pre-purchase inspection is much broader and is intended to help you understand the overall mechanical condition of the vehicle, identify existing faults and estimate future repair requirements.
For anyone spending thousands of dollars on a commercial vehicle, the two inspections serve very different purposes.

We regularly inspect vans that look tidy and drive acceptably on a short test drive, but show stored fault codes, uneven tyre wear, developing DPF problems or signs of poor servicing once they are on the hoist. A vehicle that presents well at a dealer or in a private sale can tell a very different story when the diagnostic equipment is connected and the underbody is examined properly.
Pre-purchase inspections are carried out by mechanics who work on commercial vehicles every day. We know what to look for on each model, what the common failure points are, and what the warning signs of deferred maintenance or previous damage look like.
🔍 What We Often Find During Pre-Purchase Inspections
One of the biggest surprises for buyers is how many commercial vehicles look excellent on the surface but have underlying mechanical issues that aren't obvious during a short test drive.
It's common for us to find uneven tyre wear caused by worn suspension components, oil leaks that have recently been cleaned, stored fault codes that haven't yet triggered a warning light, overloaded DPF systems, worn brakes or steering components, and evidence of previous accident repairs that the buyer wasn't aware of.
None of these faults automatically make a vehicle a bad purchase. Our role is simply to identify them, explain what they mean and help you understand the likely repair costs before you commit.

🔍 What Our Inspection Covers
Our pre-purchase inspection covers all major systems and components. Where service history is available, we review it as part of the assessment.
- Engine — condition, oil leaks, coolant condition, smoke, cold-start behaviour and performance. Signs of oil or coolant leaks being recently cleaned.
- Transmission and drivetrain — gearbox operation, clutch condition, driveshafts and differentials
- Brakes — pad and rotor condition, brake fluid, caliper condition and ABS
- Suspension and steering — shock absorbers, ball joints, tie rods, steering rack and wheel alignment
- Tyres and wheels — tread depth, tyre age, mismatched tyres and wheel condition
- Electrical systems — battery, alternator, lights, warning lights and readiness monitors
- Stored and pending diagnostic fault codes — including evidence of recently cleared codes
- DPF condition — we review available DPF data, which may include calculated soot load, regeneration history, sensor readings and related fault codes, depending on the vehicle
- Body and chassis — rust, accident damage, structural integrity and underbody loading damage
- Interior and cargo area — condition of seats, trim, seatbelts and cargo area. Towing or overloading wear.
- Fluid levels and condition — engine oil, coolant, brake fluid and transmission fluid
- Service history review — where documentation is available
🔧 We Don't Just Look For Faults
Equally important is identifying the faults that are likely to develop in the near future.
Brake pads may still pass an inspection but only have a few thousand kilometres remaining. Tyres may be legal but wearing unevenly because suspension components are beginning to deteriorate.
Understanding what maintenance is likely over the next 12 months allows buyers to budget properly rather than being surprised after the purchase.

💼 Diesel & DPF Inspection
Modern diesel commercial vehicles rely heavily on the Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) system. A vehicle may appear to drive normally while already carrying a high soot load, incomplete regeneration history or stored diesel-related fault codes.
Where supported by the vehicle, we review available DPF information including regeneration history, calculated soot loading, sensor operation and stored fault codes.

📋 Understanding the Scope of a Pre-Purchase Inspection
A pre-purchase inspection significantly reduces the risk of buying a vehicle with hidden problems, however no inspection can predict every future mechanical failure.
- We cannot determine the remaining life of every mechanical component.
- Some intermittent faults may not occur during the inspection.
- Internal engine wear cannot be assessed without dismantling components.
- Recently cleared fault codes may not immediately return.
- Our report reflects the condition of the vehicle at the time of inspection.

Does a roadworthy certificate replace a pre-purchase inspection?
No. A Victorian Roadworthy Certificate checks specific safety-related items required for registration. It does not assess overall mechanical condition, service history, DPF health, stored fault codes or likely future repair costs. A vehicle can hold a current roadworthy certificate and still have significant mechanical problems.
Can you inspect vehicles from private sellers?
Yes. We inspect vehicles regardless of where they are being sold. The vehicle needs to be brought to our Carrum Downs workshop for the inspection.
Can you inspect vehicles from another dealer?
Yes. We inspect vehicles from any source. The seller or buyer arranges for the vehicle to be delivered to our Carrum Downs workshop.
Will I receive a written report?
Yes. You receive a detailed written report covering all inspected items, with a clear assessment of the vehicle's condition, items needing immediate attention and components likely to require future maintenance.
Can you estimate repair costs?
Where issues are identified, we can provide an indication of likely repair costs based on what we find. Some faults require further diagnosis before accurate pricing is possible.
Can you inspect refrigerated vans?
Yes. We inspect refrigerated vans, modified commercial vehicles and specialist-bodied vehicles. Let us know the vehicle type when you contact us.
Can interstate buyers book inspections?
Yes. We can carry out the inspection and provide a written report. The vehicle still needs to be at our Carrum Downs workshop. Contact us to discuss the process.
Do you road test every vehicle?
We road test vehicles where appropriate and safe to do so. The road test forms part of the overall assessment alongside the mechanical inspection and diagnostic scan.
Can you inspect modified commercial vehicles?
Yes. We inspect modified commercial vehicles including those with aftermarket bodies, fitouts and equipment. Let us know the vehicle details when you contact us.
How long does the inspection take?
Most pre-purchase inspections are completed within a few hours. Complex vehicles or those requiring additional diagnostic time may take longer. We will advise you when you book.
