What is Mercedes “Black Death”?

Mercedes Black Death is the nickname given to severe carbon build-up that forms around diesel injectors after combustion gases escape past a leaking injector seal. Instead of sealing inside the combustion chamber, hot combustion gases force their way past the injector copper washer.

Over time these gases mix with diesel residue, engine oil and carbon to form an extremely hard black deposit that eventually surrounds the injectors. If left untreated, this carbon can become almost rock hard and make injector removal extremely difficult — dramatically increasing the complexity and cost of the repair.

The problem commonly affects Mercedes diesel engines including the OM646 and OM651, found across many Sprinter and Vito models. It is one of the most well-known issues affecting these vehicles. The good news is that when caught early, the repair is far more straightforward than many owners fear.
