Engine Warning Light

The engine warning light (also called the check engine light or MIL — malfunction indicator lamp) is one of the most common warning lights on the LDV Deliver 9. It can be triggered by a wide range of faults across the engine management, emissions and fuel systems.

Common causes include emissions system faults, sensor failures, turbocharger issues, injector problems, boost leaks and EGR faults. Because the engine warning light covers such a broad range of systems, diagnosis is essential before any parts are replaced.

DPF Warning Light

The DPF warning light indicates that soot loading in the diesel particulate filter has reached a level requiring attention. On the LDV Deliver 9, this is particularly common in vehicles used for urban delivery driving where short trips prevent regeneration from completing.

The DPF warning light typically follows this progression if not addressed:

When the ABS warning light is illuminated, the standard braking system continues to function normally — but the anti-lock function may be disabled. This means the wheels can lock under heavy braking, which affects stopping distance and steering control. Brake Warning Light

Coolant Temperature Warning Light

The coolant temperature warning light indicates that the engine is operating above its normal temperature range. This can be caused by low coolant level, a thermostat fault, a cooling fan failure, a blocked radiator or a head gasket issue.

An overheating engine can cause serious damage very quickly, including head gasket failure and warped cylinder heads. If the coolant temperature warning light illuminates, stop the engine as soon as it is safe to do so and allow it to cool before investigating. Do not remove the coolant cap while the engine is hot.

Limp Mode Explained

Limp mode (also called limp home mode or reduced power mode) is a protective response built into the engine management system. When the ECU detects a fault that could cause serious damage, it limits engine power and sometimes restricts gear selection to allow the vehicle to be driven carefully to a workshop.

Why Clearing Fault Codes Doesn’t Fix Problems

One of the most common situations we encounter is a customer arriving after someone has simply cleared the warning light using a basic code reader.

The light disappears. A week later it’s back. Nothing was actually repaired.

There are three important reasons why clearing codes without diagnosis is counterproductive:

  • The fault remains. Clearing a code removes the warning light but does nothing to address the underlying cause. The fault will return — often more severe than before.
  • Valuable data is lost. Modern vehicles store freeze frame data — a snapshot of sensor readings at the moment the fault was detected. This information is extremely useful for diagnosis. Erasing codes before diagnosis destroys this data and can make fault finding significantly more difficult.
  • The fault may worsen. Some faults that trigger a warning light are progressive. Ignoring them while the light is temporarily cleared allows the underlying problem to develop further, often resulting in more expensive repairs.
